The GMB has welcomed the news the £18n nuclear power station at Hinkley Point is to proceed.

Energy secretary Greg Clark yesterday signed a behind closed doors deal with the CEO of EDF Jean-Bernard Levy and chairman of CGN, He Yu to construct the Somerset plant which, the government says, will power early six million homes.

GMB national secretary Justin Bowden said: With collective sighs of relief all round, it is fantastic news that the Hinkley deal is finally signed and work can start on this vital piece of UK infrastructure.

“The formal go-ahead for Hinkley is the first serious sign that UK plc is open for business post-Brexit and holding a secret ceremony did not do justice to such an historic event.

“This is brilliant news for the 25,000 new jobs it will create during construction and for the six million homes it will provide electricity to for sixty years. Attention must now straight away shift to Bradwell B in Essex and Sizewell C in Suffolk.”
