BONG! TUC hits back at Mail’s Big Ben bollocks

Daily Mail Big BenThe TUC has hit back at a Daily Mail rant over the silencing of Big Ben to protect workers’ hearing.

The tabloid yesterday splashed the story ‘Death knell for common sense’ , blaming “health and safety” for the bell not being run over four years’ renovation work.

Columnist Richard Littlejohn went even further, with a opinion piece entitled ‘How little Hitlers of elf’n’safety succeeded where the Fuhrer failed’, calling it “one of the great tyrannies of our age”.

But the TUC has hit back to defend workers with health and safety expert Hugh Robertson saying: “We know August is silly season, but yesterday’s headlines just don’t ring true.

“When all 14 tonnes of Big Ben bongs near you, you’ll know it. At nearly 120 decibels, it’s like putting your ear next to a police siren.

“Protecting workers’ hearing is far from ‘health and safety gone mad’. It’s just plain common sense.”

Hugh was written a blog for the TUC here.
