FBU welcomes Labour’s flood defence pledge
The FBU has welcomed Labour’s announcement to “level up” flood defences, cautioning that it must “go hand-in-hand” with a properly resourced fire and rescue service.
FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said: “Flood defences play a vital role in protecting communities from flooding, but it is firefighters who are called in to save lives, property and businesses when floods hit.
“This is a welcome announcement, but it must go hand-in-hand with a properly-resourced fire and rescue service that has a statutory duty to respond to flooding.
“Large-scale floods are only going to become more likely as the climate breakdown takes hold – and both firefighters and flood defences will be crucial for keeping the public safe.”
