GMB launches petition calling on Uber to accept ET ruling
Trade unionists are being urged to sign a petition to Uber boss Jo Bertram urging her to accept last week’s employment tribunal verdict that her company acted unlawfully by not providing drivers with basic workers’ rights.
The GMB on Friday won a landmark case against the firm that means Uber drivers are entitled to receive holiday pay, a guaranteed minimum wage and an entitlement to breaks. In response to the case, Unite is to set up a ‘bogus self employment unit’ to support its members in all sectors from construction to the ‘gig’ economy.
Uber is to challenge the ET decision – a move which prompted the GMB to declare: “Uber can’t have it both ways. They should accept the tribunal verdict, drop the appeal, and either give their workers decent employment rights, or give them the freedoms of genuine self-employment.”
