Has the cap gone or not? Serwotka points finger at “confused” Tories

Mark Serwotka has accused the government of being confused over public sector pay.

Speaking as his members begin receiving ballot papers on pay, the PCS general secretary said: “There is confusion at the heart of government on the issue of public sector pay. Jeremy Hunt says the cap has gone, the Chancellor says it has not.

“We were told the issue would be covered in the budget, now they appear to be backtracking. This chaos can’t continue. All public sector workers deserve an above inflation pay rise and the cap needs to be scrapped.”

And in a message to PCS members he said: “You have an opportunity to send a clear signal to the government on pay. Years of pay restraint has to stop. Austerity isn’t working. Vote “Yes” to Scrap the Cap and for an above inflation pay rise and “Yes” to industrial action to force them to rethink.”
