Sadiq Khan praises unions in May Day message

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has praised trade unions in his May Day message to the city’s workers.
In a tweet, Sadiq Khan said: “This – International Workers’ Day – we celebrate the proud history of the trade union movement, which has improved the lives of working people and made workplaces safer and more productive. Interested in joining a trade union? Details here:
His message was welcomed by TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes, who said: “This is great news. Sadiq is right to promote union membership as a force for good. Statutory holidays, holiday and sick pay, regulated hours, equal pay, equality and diversity in the workplace – and society at large –  health and safety at work protections are all a lasting testament to the presence of trade union membership in workplaces.
“After eight years of Tory rule in City Hall under Boris and his long and boring union bashing agenda,  London’s public sector workplaces are not as equal as they should be. It is great to see Sadiq grasping this nettle and driving an agenda which will close the inequality gap and drive  change for the better and make a happier, safer London for workers at all levels who keep are city moving.

TSSA will of course be encouraging all Transport for London staff from office workers to senior managers to join our union and help us help us build a beacon workplace for workers across Britain and beyond. We thank Sadiq for working with us to achieve this and look forward to working with him and his City Hall team to continue to reverse years of Tory decline.”
