Three unions call for May to go
The leaders of three unions have called for Theresa May to resign, claiming she has has no authority despite winning last night’s vote of no confidence among her own MPs.
The Prime Minister won the vote by 200 to after saying she would not let the Tories into the next General Election.
UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis said: “The Conservative party has no effective leader. Theresa May was chosen as Prime Minister by a tiny cabal in Westminster.
“She has no plan for Brexit, or for our country. Now a large chunk of her own MPs have said they want rid of her meaning she lacks the support of the majority of MPs in Parliament.
“Our country needs leadership and direction. Theresa May, the lame duck PM, isn’t providing either. We need a general election now – that’s the only way out of this mess.”
Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said: “Millions of people have lost all confidence in this government. Tory Brexit bungling on top of the agonies of austerity means it is well past the time for Theresa May and her team to go.
“Whether it is the right moment for Labour to move a Parliamentary vote of no confidence is another matter – it is far from clear that the views of the country would be reflected in the votes of MPs.
“In particular, Jeremy Corbyn should not be bounced by those who have little or no interest in seeing Labour elected. They would be better placed using a censure motion and waiting for the right time to issue a vote of no confidence.”
TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes said: “Theresa May knows Brexit is toxic. It killed the premiership of David Cameron, the man who first foisted it upon us and she has finally announced it has killed her premiership. The trades union and labour movement must now rally behind Jeremy Corbyn and together we will kill off this most poisonous ever of Tory policies before it kills Britain.
“whatever the Tory party does to save it’s face tonight, it can’t save her skin. She’s finished. The nation has #noconfidence in her or her party. Time to stand down Theresa. And take your Brexit with you. Time now for Britain to reward itself with a Brexit amnesty.
“Time to to make way for the Prime Minister who can give that to us. Vote Corbyn. Vote Labour. Vote for a new Brexit free beginning for Britain.”
