The TSSA has added its voice in condemning the deportation from Israel of PSC chair Hugh Lanning.

Lanning, a former PCS AGS, this week became the first victim of a new law banning those who advocate a boycott or sanctions campaign from entering the country. The move was criticised by PCS and Unite.

Now TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes, who accompanied Lanning on a trip to Palestine in 2015, said: “Our union has for many years been critical of the Israeli government over their abhorrent treatment of the Palestinian people.

“However, their actions in refusing entry to anyone who speaks out in support of human rights for Palestinians is a new low and a deliberate attempt to undermine the democratic right of free speech.

“The Israeli government needs to recognise that their attempts to silence all criticism will only serve to harden the resolve of those, such as Hugh, who continue to advocate for a just and fair solution for the Palestinian people. I call on all of those in the UK who value our own democratic freedoms, including Theresa May’s government, to be vocal in their condemnation of the Israeli government for their actions in violating the human rights of British citizens such as Hugh.”
