Unions issue SSE concerns
Unions have expressed concern over the news Ovo Energy is to buy SSE’s retail business, putting at risk 8,000 jobs.
UNISON assistant general secretary Christina McAnea said: “Staff at SSE will understandably be concerned their jobs might go following the move. That’s why we’ll be seeking assurances that not a single post disappears.
“The sale is yet another sign that the UK’s energy sector is in a precarious state. The solution is to take the consumer arms of the largest energy firms into public ownership.
“This would provide better security for jobs, help deliver the government’s carbon neutral target, encourage us all to be more energy efficient and deliver cheaper bills.”
Unite national officer for energy Peter McIntosh said: “This announcement is causing massive uncertainty among workers who are concerned that they will pay the price for the sale with their jobs, pay and terms and conditions.
“Unite will not tolerate any move to erode our members’ conditions as a result of this sale. We are seeking urgent meetings with both SSE Energy Services and OVO Energy to secure cast iron assurances about our members’ futures.”
