Win Merthyr Rising tickets!
Merthyr Rising and NASUWT Cymru have teamed up with union-news.co.uk to offer four free tickets for next weekend’s event (May 24-26).
Now in its fifth year, Merthyr Rising is a music, arts and ideas festival that celebrates working class culture and resistance at the birthplace of the red flag. It takes place during the anniversary of one of the first organised uprisings by workers.
The Merthyr Rising of 1831 was the violent climax to many years of simmering unrest among the large working class population of Merthyr Tydfil where it is believed that for the first time the red flag of revolution was flown as a symbol of workers’ revolt.
Bands playing this year include Case, The Sugar Hill Gang & The Furious 5, Black Grape, The Neville Staple Band, Brushy One String and The Men They Couldn’t Hang.
Mark “PASTY” Turner, Unite Wales Regional community co-ordinator said: “Unite is delighted to be involved with this urban festival which recognises the Merthyr rising of 1831, where workers stood up to the injustice of the Iron masters. These were, among others, the proud founders of our Labour and trade union organisations, and in being the first to raise the red flag that all socialists have recognised since, starting the resistance against those employers who wish to exploit workers, and still continues today.”
NASUWT EC member Jane Setchfield said: “We are proud to be supporting this event which celebrates and commemorates an important event in the history of the trade union movement in Wales.”
